Book Donation Guidelines

If you would like to donate new or gently-used books to Makara, please visit our online catalog to learn about the books Makara is seeking for its collection. Books will be shelved in our Library & Art Center, used to stock our stewarded Little Free Libraries, or shared with our partners at emergency shelters and transitional housing sites. Twice a year, Makara hosts a book sale of discarded library books and duplicates to help support our nonprofit library and educational programs. 

Makara's Library & Art Center is focused on global arts & culture. Based on reader interest and our mission, we have set the following guidelines:


  • New books, books in good to excellent condition
  • Research nonfiction on history, economics, environment
  • Narrative nonfiction and personal essays on feminism, race, international persepectives
  • Fantasy & Sci-Fi by people of color
  • Spanish language YA, fiction anthologies, general popular fiction
  • Foreign language children's books (Spanish/Vietnamese/Khmer)
  • Art books!
  • Graphic novels


  • Books with shredded covers and torn pages
  • Books with excessive highlighter & pen marks
  • Books with water/fire/pet damage
  • Textbooks
  • Floppy disks
  • Encyclopedias
  • Dinosaur erotica
  • Bibles
